Bahrain Restricts Drinking and Prostitution

Bahrain has long been a weekend escape for men living in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait looking for a place to enjoy drinking gambling and sex. Despite minor oil reserves, Bahrain's economy is booming, in part due to a healthy stream of tourists from neighboring countries.

Bahraini officials appear to have grown tired of their capital city's reputation as "one of the top 10 cities for vice and debauchery" and have begun to outlaw alcohol and live entertainment in hotels frequented by Saudi and Kuwaiti tourists.

The government's goal is to move the tourist industry towards a family-friendly environment and to advertise wholesome family entertainment options outlawed in Saudi Arabia, including multiplex theaters, a water park, and shopping and dining spots that aren't segregated by sex.
