Leaders of 40 Muslim Nations Gather in Senegal

Heads of state and representatives of over 40 Muslim nations gathered today in Dakar, Senegal for the Eleventh Session of the Islamic Summit Conference.

The conference in organized by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The original charter of the organization is to strengthen ties between its 57 member states, promote cooperation between Islamic and non-Muslim nations and protect Muslim holy places. The delegation hopes to modernize the organization's charter to include fighting poverty in Muslim nations, facilitating diplomacy (between the presidents of Sudan and Chad for example) and improving perceptions of Islam globally.

"The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations which has membership of 57 states spread over four continents. The Organization is the collective voice of the Muslim world and ensuring to safeguard and project the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony among various people of the world."
